2013 Goal Achieved!

One of the goals I set myself at the beginning of 2013 was to get the cover of Australia's national roller derby magazine: Hit & Miss

So we have come to December and while I have had quite a lot of photos printed within the covers of the magazine this year, I hadn't been invited to supply the cover. This changed last week when I got the email I had been working towards all year.

I got the cover for the last issue of 2013!

I believe I was grinning like a cat the got the milk when I read it.

So achievement unlocked and goal completed for 2013.

The photo is from Victoria Roller Derby League's grand final I shot in November. It features Mon U Mental, Dayna Might and Mel Fyfe.

So now to workout goal(s) for 2014. Where to next?

Australasian Wrestling Federation

One of the consistent spectacles at Supanova is the Wrestling put on by Australian Wrestling Federation (AWF). Now I will admit that I am the last person to talk to about this sport. I had no interest in it when I was growing up, even though I had heaps of friends that raved about it. I was skeptical about it being introduced into Supanova years ago, but once I saw it live, in person on the floor... well lets say I can see why it's a crowd pleaser. 

So over the years I have attempted to shoot wrestling as a challenge. It's fast, hard to anticipate (when you don't know the sport enough) and full of emotion. Taking some of the lessons learnt shooting a stupid amount of Roller Derby over the last 12 months I approached the ring in Adelaide with more ideas.

Below are some of the shots I took over the weekend in Adelaide. If I lived anywhere near a ring, I would jump at the chance to improve shooting this sport.

Nina

Quite a while ago I did a shoot for Nanna's Coffee + Vintage. The images are to be used as part of advertising and branding with a fun twist. While that is still ongoing, I ask if I could share a image of first time model Nina that I love. This shot doesn't fit the brief of the project, but it's way to good to not be shown the light of day.

Power Jam

The new season of the tv show Power Jam (aka Fans of Derby) is in full swing. This season the intro graphics feature mostly images from us. Broadcast on Foxtel (paid TV in Australia) Aurora. It's great to see the sport getting national tv coverage.

BLOKTOBERFEST

In June I was commissioned to take a "whip" photo for Convict City Rollers. So early on the Monday morning of the massive long weekend tournament, I setup a very small area on the track to capture CCR skaters Shredz and MissMillie. Short on time, we did about 8 shots before the day's event started.

Finally the image is out in the wild and on a poster by CCR.
